Yamizosan Nichirinji Temple: An Ancient Temple in Daigo Town

Nichirinji Temple is a Tendai sect temple located near the eighth station on the slopes of Mt. Yamizo in Kaminomiya, Daigo Town, Kuji-gun, Ibaraki Prefecture, with Yamizosan as its sango (mountain name). It is said to have been founded by En no Ozunu, the founder of Shugendo, during the Hakuho period (late 7th century), later fell into disuse, and was restored in 807 (Daido 2) by Kobo Daishi Kukai, making it an ancient temple.
The main deity is the Eleven-faced Kannon, and it is the 21st sacred site of the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. Nichirinji Temple is a designated cultural property (historic site) of Daigo Town, and serves as the trailhead and parking lot for the Yamizosan Nichirinji Hiking Course. Around the main hall of Nichirinji Temple, you can also see autumn leaves such as ginkgo, maples, and enkianthus. Additionally, a priest is present during the day, so you can receive a Goshuin (temple stamp). Please also refer to the page on autumn foliage spots in Daigo Town.

Kotokuji Temple: A Tourist Spot in Daigo Town

Kotokuji Temple, a Soto Zen temple founded in Eisho 1 (1504) in Kamigo, Daigo Town, is a recommended tourist spot in Daigo Town. The wooden thatched temple gate exhibits characteristics of late Muromachi period architecture and is designated as a cultural property of Daigo Town along with the Nirvana painting. It is also the 5th temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Ebisu. In autumn, it is a famous spot for yellow and red leaves of ginkgo and maple trees, located along Daigo-Nasu Line (Prefectural Road 28) from National Route 118 towards Mt. Yamizo.

Jiunji Temple: Recommended Spot in Daigo Town

Jiunji Temple, a Chisan-ha Shingon sect temple located in Machitsuki, Daigo Town, is a recommended spot in Daigo Town. It is said to have been founded by Monk Ikkyo in Ninpei 2 (1152). The principal image, Senju Kannon Bodhisattva, is said to have been created by Kobo Daishi. The temple gate was built in Koan 3 (1280). It is the 4th temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Daikokuten. Jiunji Temple is also recommended as an autumn foliage spot in Daigo Town.

Horyuji Temple: Temples and Giant Trees in Daigo Town

Horyuji Temple, located in Kamikanesawa, Daigo Town, is a recommended tourist attraction in Daigo Town as the "Place of Gyoshin-shonin's Demise," where Gyoshin-shonin, the grandson of Shinran, the founder of Jodo Shinshu, and the second head of Hongan-ji Temple, passed away. The temple houses the graves of Gyoshin-shonin and hisdisciple Jozenbo. The large Kaya (Torreya nucifera) tree within the temple grounds, planted by Gyoshin-shonin, is a natural monument and designated cultural property of Daigo Town. Also, the large Ginkgo tree, the largest in Ibaraki Prefecture with a trunk circumference of 11 meters, is said to have been planted by Kakunyo-shonin, the third head of Hongan-ji Temple, and serves as Gyoshin-shonin's grave marker. Furthermore, both the seated statue of Gyoshin-shonin and the standing statue of Shotoku Taishi at the temple are designated tangible cultural properties of Daigo Town, and the temple grounds of Horyuji Temple are also designated as a historical cultural property of Daigo Town as the "Place of Gyoshin-shonin's Demise." The large Kaya and Ginkgo trees, both the largest giant trees in Ibaraki Prefecture, are located opposite each other and are recommended power spots in Daigo Town.

Shotokuji Temple, located in Shimokanazawa, Daigo Town, is a Shingon sect temple and a recommended spot in Daigo Town. It was founded in Entoku 2 (1490) by Yuuki Hoin. It is the 6th temple on the Oku-Kuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, and enshrines Bishamonten. It is a recommended spot for cherry blossoms.

Ganseiji Temple: Daigo, Daigo Town

Ganseiji Temple, located in Daigo, Daigo Town, is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Otani sect, and its principal image, the Amitabha Nyorai statue, is designated as an important cultural property. In autumn, the maple trees and dōdan tsutsuji (redvein azaleas) planted along the temple's approach turn beautiful colors, allowing visitors to enjoy the autumn foliage. Eigenji Temple, located in Daigo, Daigo Town, is a Soto Zen temple founded in Bun'an 3 (1446). It is also known as "Maple Temple," and during the autumn leaves season, people come from all over the country to enjoy the autumn foliage. Please also see the Daigo Town Autumn Leaves Spot page. Furthermore, being on a hill, it offers a panoramic view of Daigo Town. Eigenji Temple is designated as a cultural heritage (scenic spot) of Daigo Town. It is the 7th temple on the Oku-Kuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Benzaiten.

Jissoin Temple: Ono, Daigo Town

Jissoin Temple is a Shingon-shu Buzan-ha temple located in Ono, Daigo Town, and is a recommended spot in Daigo Town. It was established in Tenbun 12 (1543), and the current main hall was rebuilt in 1937. The temple grounds feature weeping cherry trees and Nio statues. It is the third temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, enshrining Fukurokuju. *Goshuin are currently not issued.

Ryutaiin Temple: Fukuroda, Daigo Town

Kumanosan Ryutaiin Temple is a Soto Zen temple located in Fukuroda, Daigo Town. It is the second temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage, enshrining Hoteison. Its founding is said to be in Tenbun 2 (1533) by the Satake clan. It is also said that Tokugawa Mitsukuni visited in Genroku 8 (1695) and exchanged Chinese poems with the chief priest, Shuugetsu-shi. Nearby is Fukuroda Falls, one of Japan's three great waterfalls.

Chofukuji Temple: Korofuji, Daigo Town

Sokatsuyama Chofukuji Temple is a Soto Zen temple located in Korofuji, Daigo Town, and is a recommended spot in Daigo Town. Originally, it was a Ritsu sect temple founded by Monk Baikan in Nagamoto 2 (1029) on Mt. Chofuku, but it is said that in Bunmei 1 (1469), Yoshifusa Ogawa of the Satake clan invited Zen Master Daitsu Senpo and converted it to the Soto Zen sect. The Sanmon gate, a three-bay, one-entrance two-storied gate built in Bunka 1 (1804), is designated as a cultural property by Daigo Town. It is the first temple on the Oku-Kuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Jurojin.
