Yamizosan Nichirinji Temple: An Ancient Temple in Daigo Town

Nichirinji Temple is a Tendai sect temple with the mountain name Yamizo-san, located near the eighth station on the slopes of Mt. Yamizo in Uenomiya, Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture.It is said to have been founded in the Hakuhō period (late 7th century) by En no Ozunu, the founder of Shugendō, then fell into disuse, and was later restored in 807 (Daido 2) by Kobo Daishi Kukai, making it an ancient temple.
Its principal image is the Eleven-faced Kannon, and it is the 21st temple of the Bandō 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. Nichirinji Temple is a Daigo Town Designated Cultural Property (historic site) and serves as the trailhead and parking lot for the Mt. Yamizo Nichirinji hiking course. Also, around Nichirinji Temple's main hall, you can see autumn leaves such as ginkgo and maple trees, and Enkianthus perulatus. Please note that during the day, the chief priest is present, so you can also receive a Goshuin (temple seal).Please also see the page for Daigo Town's famous autumn foliage spots.

Kōtokuji Temple: A Tourist Attraction in Daigo Town

Kotokuji Temple is a Soto Zen temple founded in 1504 (Eisho 1) in Kami-go, Daigo-machi, and is a recommended tourist spot in Daigo-machi. Its wooden thatched gate (sanmon) exhibits architectural characteristics of the late Muromachi period and, along with the Nirvana painting, is designated as a cultural property of Daigo-machi. It is also the fifth temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry for tourism, and enshrines Ebisu. In autumn, it is a famous spot for the yellow and red leaves of ginkgo and maple trees and is located along the Daigo-Nasu Line (Prefectural Road 28), which leads from National Route 118 towards Mt. Yamizo.

Jionji Temple: Recommended Spots in Daigo Town

Jiunji Temple is a Chisan-ha Shingon sect temple located in Machitsuki, Daigo Town, and is a recommended spot in Daigo Town. It is said that it was founded by Priest Ikkyo in 1152. The principal image, Senju Kannon Bodhisattva (Thousand-armed Kannon), is said to have been created by Kobo Daishi. The temple gate was built in 1280. It is the 4th temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry for tourism, and enshrines Daikokuten. Jiunji Temple is also a recommended autumn foliage spot in Daigo Town.

Horyuji Temple: Temple and Giant Tree in Daigo Town

Horyuji Temple is a temple located in Kaminakazawa, Daigo-machi, and is a recommended tourist attraction in Daigo-machi as "the place where Jushin-shonin passed away," who was the grandson of Shinran, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, and considered the second head of Honganji Temple. The temple has the graves of Jushin-shonin and his disciple, Jozenbo. The large kaya (Japanese torreya) tree on the temple grounds was planted by Jushin-shonin himself and is a natural monument and designated cultural property of Daigo-machi. Additionally, the large ginkgo tree, which is the largest in Ibaraki Prefecture with a trunk circumference of 11 meters, is said to have been planted by Kakunyo-shonin, the third head of Honganji Temple, and serves as Jushin-shonin's gravestone. Furthermore, the seated statue of Jushin-shonin and the standing statue of Shotoku Taishi at the temple are both designated tangible cultural properties of Daigo-machi, and the temple grounds of Horyuji are also designated historical cultural properties of Daigo-machi as "the place where Jushin-shonin passed away." The large kaya and ginkgo trees, each being the largest in Ibaraki Prefecture and located opposite each other, are recommended power spots in Daigo-machi.

Shōtoku-ji Temple (Shōtokuji) is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Shimokanazawa, Daigo-machi, and is a recommended spot in Daigo-machi. It was founded in Entoku 2 (1490) by the Buddhist priest Yūki Hōin. It is the 6th temple on the Oku-Kuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo-machi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Bishamonten. It is a recommended spot for cherry blossoms.

Ganseiji Temple, located in Daigo, Daigo-machi, is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Otani-ha sect, and its principal image, the Amitabha Buddha statue, is designated as an important cultural property. In autumn, the maple trees and Enkianthus perulatus planted along the temple path on the grounds turn beautiful colors, allowing visitors to enjoy the autumn foliage. Eigen-ji Temple: Daigo, Daigo Town - Famous Autumn Leaves Spot

Eigenji Temple is a Soto Zen temple founded in Daigo, Daigo-machi in Bun'an 3 (1446). Also known as "Momiji-dera" (Maple Temple), it attracts maple leaf viewers from all over the country during the autumn foliage season. Please also refer to the page on famous autumn foliage spots in Daigo-machi. Furthermore, being located on a hill, it offers a panoramic view of Daigo-machi's townscape. Eigenji Temple is designated as a cultural heritage site (place of scenic beauty) of Daigo-machi. It is the seventh temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage recommended by the Daigo-machi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Benzaiten.

Jisso-in Temple: Ono, Daigo Town

Jissoin Temple is a Shingon-shu Buzan-ha temple located in Ono, Daigo-machi, and is a recommended spot in Daigo-machi. It was established in Tenmon 12 (1543), and the current main hall was rebuilt in 1937. Within the temple grounds, there are weeping cherry trees, Nio statues, and more. It is the 3rd temple on the Oku-Kuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo-machi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Fukurokuju. *Goshuin (temple seals) are currently not issued.

Ryutai-in Temple: Fukuroda, Daigo Town

Kumanozan Ryutai-in is a Soto Zen temple located in Fukuroda, Daigo-machi. It is the second temple on the Okukuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage and enshrines Hoteison. It is said to have been founded in Tenbun 2 (1533) by the Satake clan. It is also said that Tokugawa Mitsukuni visited in Genroku 8 (1695) and exchanged Chinese poems with the head priest, Master Shugetsu. Nearby is Fukuroda Falls, one of Japan's three great waterfalls.

Chofukuji Temple: Korofuji, Daigo Town

Shukatsusan Chofukuji Temple is a Sōtō Zen temple located in Korofujikorofuji, Daigo Town, and is a recommended spot in Daigo Town. It is said that it was originally a Risshū temple founded by Monk Baikan in the year 1029 (Chōgen 2) on Mt. Chōfuku. However, in 1469 (Bunmei 1), Yoshifusa Ogawa of the Satake clan invited Zen Master Daitsū Senpo and converted it to the Sōtō sect. The Sanmon gate, a double-gated structure with three bays and one entrance built in 1804 (Bunka 1), has been designated a cultural property by Daigo Town. It is the first temple on the Oku-Kuji Daigo Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage, recommended by the Daigo Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and enshrines Jurojin.
