Mt. Yamizo is the highest peak in Ibaraki Prefecture, with an elevation of 1,022m, located on the border of Ibaraki, Fukushima, and Tochigi Prefectures. At its summit, there is an observation deck and Yamizoreijinja Shrine, a shrine listed in the Engishiki, making it a famous spot for autumn leaves. From the mid-slope to the summit, there are not many maples, and the foliage is mainly yellow leaves from trees like oak, beech, lacquer, and maple. The photo was taken on November 11, 2022, and while the autumn leaves near the summit have already finished, the foothills and mid-slopes are at their best. Maple trees are planted by the parking lot. The photo shows the autumn foliage landscape near the information board on the road below the Mt. Yamizo summit observation deck. At about 80% up the southern slope of Mt. Yamizo, there is a spring called Kinseisui. The entrance to Kinseisui is located along the Yamizo Forest Road, and in its vicinity, you can see autumn foliage of trees such as oak, beech, lacquer, maple, and Japanese maple. North of the Kinseisui entrance, the road widens and there is parking space for a few cars. Please be careful when parking, as there are side ditches near the parking area.

Approximately 4 kilometers from the torii gate at the entrance of the Yamizo Forest Road, there is a covered rest area with benches. The hiking trail to Nichirinji Temple is about 20 meters before this point. Also, the view from the sky is magnificent, so please take a look.

Yamizosan Nichirinji Temple, located in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, is an ancient temple of the Tendai sect and the 21st Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) temple of the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
You can enjoy the autumn leaves and yellow leaves of ginkgo trees to the west of Nichirinji Temple's main hall, giant maple trees in front of the main hall, maple trees to the south of the parking lot in front of the main hall and to the east of the approach, and enkianthus to the east and behind the main hall. Yamizo Ryukoshin is located about 20m from Yamizo Mine Shrine Otorii. The origin is unknown as there is no explanatory sign, but there is an impressive ancient maple tree. Although it could not be measured due to the terrain, it is probably about 3m in trunk circumference and is thought to be the largest in Ibaraki Prefecture. The best time to see it is from early to mid-December, unlike the surrounding maple trees.

The Yamizo Momiji Line is an approximately 1.8 km section from the entrance of Yamizo-san Park Line on the Daigo-Nasu Line (Prefectural Road No. 28) to the Yamizo Rindo Entrance (Yamizorei Shrine Grand Torii Gate). Along the Yamizo River, splendid maple trees are planted on both sides of the road, and in autumn, you can see these trees dyed brilliant red in this section. If you are going to the summit of Mt. Yamizo from Daigo Station in autumn, you can fully enjoy the autumn scenery of Mt. Yamizo by using the forest road from the Yamizo Rindo Entrance with the Yamizorei Shrine Grand Torii Gate for the ascent, and the Yamizo-san Park Line (Prefectural Road No. 248) for the descent. Kotokuji Temple is an ancient temple of the Soto Zen sect located in Uenomiya, Daigo Town. It has a wooden, thatched gate, which is a designated cultural property of Daigo Town. At Kotokuji Temple, you can enjoy the autumn leaves of giant ginkgo trees, maples, and Enkianthus perulatus. It is a famous spot for yellow and red autumn leaves of ginkgo and maple trees, located on Daigo-Nasu Line (Prefectural Road 28) heading towards Mt. Yamizo from National Route 118. Jomyoji Temple, located in Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture, became a Soto Zen temple when the Satake clan advanced into Yorikamihokoro, which is now Daigo Town, in the 1950s, and is the main temple of Ryutaiin. Jomyoji Temple has numerous maple trees near the approach path and parking lot, within the temple grounds, and on the slopes of the back mountain. Currently, there are people present, but the head priest also serves as the head priest of Kotokuji Temple.

Tsukimachi Falls is a waterfall 17m high and 12m wide, and is a famous tourist attraction in Daigo Town. Perhaps because it becomes a parent-child waterfall when the water level rises, it has long been a place for the Nijusan-ya-ko (23rd Night Gathering) to pray for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and good fortune. There are many maple trees along the path to the falls and around the falls, allowing you to enjoy exceptionally beautiful scenery during the autumn foliage season. Eigenji Temple's main hall is located on a hill about 25m above the parking lot (elevation 107m). From the stone pillar at the entrance, the approach gently ascends southward for about 80m, then turns north for about 50m. Both sides of this approach are adorned with numerous magnificent autumn leaves. There is also a direct path ascending westward from the entrance to the main hall, which also boasts many autumn leaves. Mount Okukuji Nantai, spanning Hitachiotami City and Daigo Town, is a popular peak for climbing, despite its 653.9m elevation, offering advanced climbing routes with treacherous sections. There are multiple climbing courses, and during the autumn foliage season, you can enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery of Okukuji while hiking. The Okukuji Panorama Line also runs along the southern slope of Mount Nantai, with approximately 150m of the southern road offering superb views. It's a recommended spot for an autumn drive. Tsutsujigaoka Observatory is located on a 252m hill, offering a superb view of the Nantai Mountain range, including Mt. Chofuku, Mt. Nantai, and Kago-iwa.
At Tsutsujigaoka Observatory, you can enjoy the autumn foliage of maple, beech, inu-buna (Japanese hornbeam), and mizunara (Japanese oak) from mid-November to early December. From the parking lot to the observatory is approximately 180m with an altitude difference of 20m, taking about 5-10 minutes. The photo is an aerial shot taken before sunset on November 25, 2023, with the observatory on the lower left and the parking lot in the center right. From the left, Okukuji Nantaiyama (653m), Mt. Takatori (460m), Mt. Kago-iwa (501m), and Kago-iwa. A sheer cliff continues south from Mt. Nantai. The Tsutsujigaoka parking lot is at an altitude of 230m, and the observatory is at 250m, offering superb views of the Nantai Mountain range during the autumn foliage season from both locations.
