Mt. Yamizo is the highest peak in Ibaraki Prefecture, with an elevation of 1,022m, located on the border of Ibaraki, Fukushima, and Tochigi Prefectures. At its summit, there is an observation deck and Yamizorei Shrine, an ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki-shiki, making it a famous spot for autumn foliage. From the middle to the summit, there are not many Japanese maples (momiji), but rather a predominance of yellow leaves from trees such as oak, beech, lacquer, and maple. The photos were taken on November 11, 2022, and while the autumn leaves near the summit had already finished, the foothills and middle slopes were still at their best. There is a spring called Kinseisui located about eight-tenths up the southern slope of Mt. Yamizo. There is an entrance to Kinseisui along the Yamizo Forest Road, and in its vicinity, you can enjoy the autumn leaves and yellow foliage, mainly from oak, beech, lacquer, maple, and Japanese maple trees. The road widens to the north of the Kinseisui entrance, providing parking space for several vehicles. Please be careful when parking, as there is a ditch near the parking space.

Approximately 4 kilometers from the torii gate at the entrance of Yamizosan Forest Road, there is a covered resting place with benches. The hiking trail to Nichirinji Temple is about 20 meters before this spot. Also, the aerial view is spectacular, so please take a look.

Yamizosan Nichirinji Temple, located in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, is an ancient temple of the Tendai sect and the 21st Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) of the Bando 33 Kannon pilgrimage.
You can enjoy autumn leaves and yellow leaves such as ginkgo trees to the west of Nichirinji Temple's main hall, large Japanese maples in front of the main hall, Japanese maples to the south of the parking lot in front of the main hall and to the east of the approach, and enkianthus to the east and rear of the main hall. Yamizo Ryukojin is located approximately 20m from Yamizo Mine Shrine Otorii. There is no explanatory sign and its origin is unknown, but there is an impressive old maple tree. Due to the terrain, it was not possible to measure it, but it probably has a trunk circumference of about 3m and is thought to be the largest in Ibaraki Prefecture. Its best viewing period, unlike the surrounding maples, is thought to be from early December to mid-December.

The Yamizo Momiji Line is approximately a 1.8 km section from the Yamizosan Park Line entrance on the Daigo-Nasu Line (Prefectural Road No. 28) to the Yamizo Forest Road entrance (Yamizorei Shrine Grand Torii Gate). Magnificent maple trees are planted on both sides of the road along the Yamizo River, and in autumn, you can enjoy viewing the vibrant red maple leaves in this section. If you are heading to the summit of Mount Yamizo from Daigo Station in autumn, you can fully enjoy the autumn scenery of Mount Yamizo by using the forest road from the Yamizo Forest Road entrance (where the Yamizorei Shrine Grand Torii Gate is located) for the ascent and the Yamizosan Park Line (Prefectural Road No. 248) for the descent. Kōtokuji Temple is an ancient temple of the Sōtō Zen sect, located in Kaminomiya, Daigo-machi. It has a wooden thatched temple gate, which is a designated cultural property of Daigo-machi. At Kōtokuji Temple, you can enjoy the yellow leaves and autumn foliage of giant ginkgo trees, autumn leaves, and enkianthus. It is a famous spot for the yellow and red leaves of ginkgo and maple trees. It is located along the Daigo-Nasu Line (Prefectural Road 28) heading towards Mt. Jomyo-ji Temple, located in Daigo-cho, Kuji-gun, Ibaraki Prefecture, became a Soto Zen temple when the Satake clan advanced into Egamiho, which is now Daigo-cho, in the 1950s, and it is the head temple of Ryutai-in. Jomyo-ji Temple has numerous maple trees near its approach and parking lot, within its precincts, and on the slopes of the mountain behind it. Currently, while the temple is attended, the chief priest of Kotokuji Temple serves concurrently.

Tsukimachi Falls is a 17m high and 12m wide waterfall, and a tourist attraction in Daigo Town. Perhaps because it becomes a "parent-child waterfall" when the water level rises, it has long been a place for the "Nijusan-ya-ko" (23rd Night Gathering) where people pray for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and good fortune. There are many maple trees along the path to the waterfall and around it, offering a uniquely beautiful view during the autumn foliage season. Fukuroda Falls is counted as one of Japan's three great waterfalls, boasting a height of 120m and a width of 73m. At Fukuroda Falls, you can enjoy the changing scenery throughout the four seasons, and especially during the autumn foliage season, you can see a magnificent view with vibrant red and yellow colors. Oku-Kuji Nantaisan, although 653.9m high and straddling Hitachiota City and Daigo Town, is a highly popular famous mountain with advanced climbing courses that include challenging sections. There are multiple climbing courses, and during the autumn foliage season, you can enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery of Oku-Kuji while hiking. In addition, the Oku-Kuji Panorama Line runs along the base of Mt. Nantai's southern slope, and approximately 150m of the road on the south side offers a superb view. The Tsutsujigaoka Observatory, located on a 252m hill, offers a magnificent view of the Mt. Nantai mountain range, including Mt. Chofuku, Mt. Nantai, and Kago-iwa.
At the Tsutsujigaoka Observatory, from mid-November to early December, you can enjoy the autumn foliage of maples, beeches, Japanese hornbeams, and Mizunara oaks. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the observatory, covering approximately 180m with an elevation difference of 20m.
