Landscape photo near the main hall of Shirataki Shrine on Mt. Tsukuba and link to VR tour

Shirataki Shrine is located along the Mt. Tsukuba Shirataki Michi hiking trail in Usui, Tsukuba City. The shrine enshrines Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, and its founding date is unknown. The forest road was once part of a ritual route from the present Rokushō Kōtaijingū Reikai (Sacred Site) to the main halls of Mt. Tsukuba Shrine (Mt. Nantai and Mt. Nyotai), so it seems to have been a famous spot before the Meiji era. The explanatory signboard states a legend that when Yamato Takeru no Mikoto lost his way at the foot of Mt. Tsukuba during his eastern expedition, he followed a white bird that flew out of this forest and escaped the labyrinth. Therefore, it was formerly known as Shiratori Shrine. Next to the approach to the shrine is Shirataki Waterfall, a two-tiered waterfall with an upper section of 3m and a lower section of 5m.

Iina Shrine is a historic shrine of unknown origin located in Usui, Tsukuba City, which is a Shikigai-sha (shrine not listed in the Engishiki). It is an ancient shrine (Shikigai-sha) mentioned as "Iina-no-kami" in the "Hitachi Province Fudoki." According to this, its founding dates back to before the 8th century, and from this, Iina Shrine is said to be the oldest shrine on Mount Tsukuba.
In the Middle Ages, it was called "Iinano Shrine" or "Inano-no-miya." There is an article in the "Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku" (Veritable Records of Three Reigns of Japan), Ninna 3 (887) entry, stating "Jurokui-jo (Senior Sixth Rank) Sugata-no-Kami was granted Jugoi-ge (Junior Fifth Rank Lower)," and this shrine is believed to be that "Sugata-no-Kami," designated as an "Shikigai-sha" (a shrine not listed in the Engishiki, but mentioned in national histories). The shrine houses three wooden statues of male deities, one of which is believed to be Kenkoromikoto, created around the Muromachi period, and is a designated cultural property of Ibaraki Prefecture. Its founding is said to be when Kenkoromikoto, the 14th descendant of Amatsuhikone no Mikoto, was appointed and inherited the position of Hitachi-kuni no Miyatsuko (governor of Hitachi Province), and his branch family, Sugata no Obito, chose this land (Sugata-go) to enshrine their ancestors. According to local elders, before the eastern farmland was redeveloped, there was a magnificent long approach of several hundred meters lined with giant pine trees.

Tsukuyomi Shrine is a shrine in Hinozawa, Tsukuba City, believed to have been founded in Tenkei 8 (945). Originally, it was a syncretic shrine of Shinto and Buddhism, with Seishi Bosatsu, who was Taira no Masakado's protective Buddha, as its principal deity. However, due to the Shinbutsu-Bunri (separation of Shinto and Buddhism) order in the Meiji era, Seishi Bosatsu was enshrined as Tsukuyomi no Mikoto. It is also known as Nijusan-ya-son and is widely revered for bestowing blessings of childbearing. Furthermore, within the shrine grounds, there is a must-see sacred tree, a giant Sudajii tree, approximately 15 meters tall with a trunk circumference of about 8 meters at eye level.
