Related Information on Swans and Reasons why there are many swan migratory sites in Ibaraki Prefecture

Reasons Why Ibaraki Prefecture Has Many Swan Migration Sites

(1) Many Safe Ponds, Swamps, and Lakes
  • Ibaraki Prefecture ranks 4th in the nation for habitable land area with many flatlands, and also has many shallow ponds, swamps, and lakes. The number of agricultural reservoirs is 1,277, the highest in the Kanto region.
  • Ibaraki Prefecture is warm, and most lakes and marshes are located in lowlands with good views and do not freeze, which prevents carnivorous animals from approaching and ensures a food supply.
  • Ibaraki Prefecture ranks 2nd in the nation after Hokkaido for total road length, at 51,386.4 km. Most of the migration sites are entirely or partially surrounded by paved roads, about half of the migration sites are located in urban areas, and places considered dangerous for children are fenced off with wire mesh, creating an environment where carnivorous animals cannot approach.
(2) Abundance of Swan Food
  • The flatland lakes and marshes in Ibaraki Prefecture are shallow and marshy, with an abundance of aquatic plants such as reeds, cattails, Manchurian wild rice, and water chestnuts, which serve as food for swans.
  • Ibaraki Prefecture is the second largest agricultural prefecture in Japan, and all migration sites are surrounded by rice fields with many fallen grains. In addition, Ibaraki is the top producer of lotus root, a favorite food of swans.
*On the other hand, there are also issues of agricultural damage, and while countermeasures are in place, many unsalable lotus roots are left on ridges and other areas during the lotus root season.
(3) Within the Flight Distance Limit of Multiple Swan Species
Whooper swans, due to their weight, have a flight range of approximately 3000 km, with their wintering grounds extending from Hokkaido to the border of the Tone River in Ibaraki Prefecture (Swan Village in Itako City). Tundra swans, on the other hand, have a flight range of approximately 4000 km, with their wintering grounds extending from Miyagi Prefecture to Shimane Prefecture. Ibaraki Prefecture is within the migratory flight distance limit for both Whooper swans and Tundra swans. Furthermore, Mute swans from Lake Utonai in Hokkaido have been confirmed to winter at Kitaura in Lake Kasumigaura (Swan Village in Itako City) in Ibaraki Prefecture. The distance between these locations is 750 km.
