Although named Sekiyado Sluice Gate, it is a sluice gate located at the head of the Edogawa River, which branches off from the Tonegawa River in Sanno, Goka Town. The Sekiyado Sluice Gate was started in 1918 (Taisho 7) and completed in 1927 (Showa 2). It consists of the Sekiyado Weir (Sekiyado Suimon) used for water volume control and the Sekiyado Lock (Sekiyado Komon) used for boat traffic. Although the lock function has ended its role with the decline of river transportation, you can observe the gates opening on River Day (July 7). The weir still plays an important role in preventing floods in urban areas downstream of the Edogawa River in Chiba Prefecture, Tokyo, etc.
In 2003, the Japan Society of Civil Engineers recognized its historical value and its symbolic presence in the Tonegawa River improvement project, designating it as a recommended civil engineering heritage site.

The Edogawa River originated when the Tone River Eastern Diversion Project was started by Inatadaji and others after Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo, and the upper reaches of the Edogawa River were excavated as an artificial waterway. At the same time, the main stream of the Tone River, which used to flow into Tokyo Bay, has a history of coming to flow through Ibaraki Prefecture (mouth: Kamisu City) and Chiba Prefecture (mouth: Choshi City). The Tone River Eastern Diversion Project was intended to protect Edo from floods and other disasters. Currently, the Edogawa River plays an important role as a water source for Tokyo.
